GAP at the High-Level Meeting on the New Urban Agenda and UN-Habitat

The GAP ExCo developed a response to the High-Level Independent Panel to assess the effectiveness of UN-Habitat, circulated widely. In partnership with the Global Taskforce, GAP organised the Stakeholder Consultation of 5 September, featuring several GAP co-chairs. The GAP Executive Council met in New York City to discuss future plans.

Executive Committee meeting and Sixth Plenary Meeting

GAP held its Sixth Plenary Meeting on 7 May 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya, where it approved its revised Constitution and discussed the PCGs' Strategic Frameworks and Action Plans towards implementation of the New Urban Agenda. It sponsored workshops and a Seventh Extraordinary Plenary on 11 May. The Media PCG published a 58-page Media Coverage 2015-2017 e-book.

Executive Committee meeting: PCG Strategic Frameworks and Action Plans

The Executive Committee met again to review each PCG's Strategic Framework and Action Plan for the New Urban Agenda, reviewed members' inputs, and finalised the draft revised Constitution and By-Laws to distribute to the membership for a vote at the Sixth Plenary.

GAP Executive Committee meeting in New York

The GAP Executive Committee met in New York City to consolidate its inputs from the Habitat III process, review the membership survey results, and complete the draft revised Constitution. The Executive Committee decided that each PCG would develop a Strategic Framework and Action Plan for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

Habitat III, Quito: meeting with the UN Secretary-General

The Habitat III Conference took place in Quito, Ecuador. The New Urban Agenda references GAP (para. 128). The Executive Committee was invited to meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The GAP President and Vice President addressed the opening and closing plenaries. At the Fifth GAP Plenary, the membership voted to continue towards implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

Fourth Plenary and associated Executive Committee (PrepCom3)

GAP convened its Fourth Plenary and an associated Executive Committee meeting alongside the Third Preparatory Committee for Habitat III (PrepCom3). The Persons with Disabilities PCG was approved for membership, and the number of PCGs grew to 16.

Informal hearings with Major Groups and Other Stakeholders

GAP hosted the informal hearings with Major Groups and Other Stakeholders in collaboration with the Secretariat and Member States. All PCGs, represented by their chairs, the President and Vice President, and more than 40 speakers offered views on the draft New Urban Agenda. GAP took part in the Ford Foundation Civil Society Week.

Partnerships for the New Urban Agenda

After an extensive consultation process, GAP published its consensus outcome document, Partnerships for the New Urban Agenda, conceived in Berlin. It outlines proposals that emphasise multi-stakeholder engagement in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

Third Plenary Meeting, Prague

Alongside the Regional Meeting for the WEOG region, GAP held its Third Plenary Meeting and an Executive Committee meeting. The Older Persons PCG was approved for membership, growing the number of PCGs to 15. The GAP President addressed the opening plenary.

Berlin: the strategic roadmap of GAP

With funding from Germany, half of the Executive Committee (one co-chair per PCG) met in Berlin to brainstorm the strategic roadmap and contributions of GAP. They agreed on the basic values and principles for the New Urban Agenda and developed a post-Habitat III partnership strategy focused on knowledge-sharing, advocacy, experimentation, monitoring and financial oversight.

Executive Committee and the Second Plenary

GAP held two meetings: the Executive Committee and the Second Plenary. The Plenary adopted the New York Declaration, also presented to the Bureau. The Declaration pledged to create multi-stakeholder partnerships and to provide a framework for a strong stakeholder legacy in the post-Habitat III era.

Future of Places Conference, Stockholm

The GAP Executive Committee held its second meeting in Stockholm during the Future of Places Conference, discussing GAP's anticipated programme. The President volunteered to develop a PCG Chairs' Handbook to consolidate important information for the organization.

Inaugural Meeting, Nairobi

GAP held its inaugural meeting on 13 April 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya, where it adopted its Constitution and By-Laws, elected the Executive Committee, and began outreach to all PCG constituencies. At this meeting GAP adopted the Nairobi Declaration, outlining its commitments to the elaboration of the New Urban Agenda and requesting recognition and engagement in the Habitat III process.

Urban Thinkers Campus

At the first Urban Thinkers Campus, partners of the World Urban Campaign decided to create the General Assembly of Partners as an engagement platform to include a broader range of stakeholders and constituencies in the Habitat III process. As an outcome of the Urban Journalism Academies, the Media was recognised as a constituency in relation to urban issues.
